Embarking on the entrepreneurial journey requires more than just a business idea—it demands a unique mindset, strategic thinking, and the ability to navigate challenges. Join me, Noah Jewkes, the lead designer and technical founder of Jewkes Design, as I share my entrepreneurial experiences and offer insights gained along the way.

What are three things every entrepreneur should know?

In the realm of entrepreneurship, understanding the “why” behind your venture is paramount. It’s not just about what you do but why you do it. This principle, inspired by Simon Sinek’s ‘Start with Why,’ has been pivotal for our company. We’re not just designing homes; we’re crafting personalized living experiences.

Communication skills are equally important. While technical expertise is vital in my field, the ability to communicate effectively, whether through verbal, written, or visual means, is what truly sets entrepreneurs apart. Lastly, knowing when to delegate tasks beyond your expertise is a skill that can’t be overstated. Acknowledging one’s limitations and assembling a skilled team is key to sustainable growth.

What problem does your business solve, and who are its customers?

Our mission is to streamline the complex process of designing custom homes.

Imagine starting a construction project without a clear plan—chaotic, right? We cater to those seeking not just a house but a well-planned, stress-free experience. Our customers are individuals and families with a vision for their dream home, looking for a partner to guide them through every step, ensuring a seamless journey from concept to reality.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

For me, the inspiration for entrepreneurship stems from a deep desire for freedom—both financial and temporal. The dream of controlling my destiny, taking risks, and charting my own course fueled my decision to venture into the world of entrepreneurship. While it comes with its unique set of challenges, the ability to shape my own path and embrace the journey is a reward in itself.

Knowing what you know now, how would you have spent a million dollars when you first started your business?

Reflecting on the early stages of my business, injecting a million dollars might have led to unintended consequences.

One of our initial challenges was growing too quickly. More funds at that time might have accelerated the process, but it could have been like adding gasoline to a fire. Strategic growth, careful planning, and a focus on sustainable development would have been a wiser approach.

What is your proudest accomplishment as an entrepreneur?

Navigating my company through the peaks and valleys of the construction industry during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic stands out as a significant achievement.

By emphasizing responsiveness and prioritizing customer service, we not only maintained stability but also solidified our commitment to clients during uncertain times. It’s a testament to the resilience and adaptability required in entrepreneurship.

What big goals are you looking to achieve?

As we look ahead, the next phase for Jewkes Design involves transitioning into managing operations from a distance. I aim to be more hands-off on certain aspects, allowing us to focus on strategic growth. Expanding into new markets, such as our recent venture in Seattle, is on the horizon.

As well, we’re planning to offer additional services, including interior design, to provide a comprehensive solution for our clients. These goals align with our vision for sustained growth and enhanced customer satisfaction.

Noah’s entrepreneurial journey has been a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs. Understanding the “why,” effective communication, strategic growth, and a commitment to customer service have been the cornerstones of his success.
