Armando Viteri, CEO and President of Neubloc LLC, has a storied career in the entrepreneurial world, marked by early triumphs, significant challenges, and the wisdom accrued from both successes and failures. In a candid conversation with Lance Johnson, founder and CEO of Amplomedia, Viteri shared insights from his journey, offering valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs. His experiences underline the importance of market research, mentorship, and humility in the entrepreneurial process.

The Critical Importance of Market Research

Reflecting on his extensive experience, Viteri identifies a common pitfall among startups: falling in love with an idea without adequate market validation. “The number one mistake I see entrepreneurs make is not doing the primary market research before committing to their idea,” he says. This, he argues, is critical in understanding whether the idea addresses a real need and if there is a viable path to reach the target audience.

He stresses, “You need to ask yourself: Who is my target buyer? Is it a nice-to-have or a need-to-have for them? And do I have a way to get in front of that target economic buyer?” According to Viteri, addressing these questions early on can prevent many of the failures that startups encounter. He estimates that 90% of entrepreneurial failures could be avoided with thorough initial research.

The Value of Real Mentorship

Another key lesson from Viteri’s journey is the importance of surrounding oneself with true mentors—those who have experienced both the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. “Surround yourself with mentors who have gone through the entire journey, from startup to exit, and especially those who have faced failure,” he advises.

Viteri speaks from personal experience, having benefited greatly from mentors who provided not just advice but actionable insights derived from their own successes and failures. “I had a massive failure in my career, raising $42 million only to experience a catastrophic fail. That experience taught me more than any of my successes,” he recalls.

Avoiding Hubris

Hubris, or excessive pride, is another trap that Viteri warns against. His own career, marked by early successes, led to a painful but enlightening realization of the dangers of overconfidence. “After a string of successes, we thought we were invincible. We didn’t do the basic primary research and didn’t have the right mentors. That led to our downfall,” he admits.

This humbling experience reinforced the importance of maintaining a grounded perspective and continuously seeking external validation and guidance. “Avoid hubris at all costs,” he emphasizes, noting that staying humble and open to learning is crucial for sustained success.

Neubloc LLC: Innovating with AI

Viteri’s current venture, Neubloc LLC, exemplifies his evolved approach to business. The company specializes in software development services, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI). “We have a portfolio of companies, some in services and some in technology startups. What ties them together is the use of AI,” he explains.

Under Viteri’s leadership, Neubloc has become a significant player, particularly in the storage device sector. The company’s shift towards AI began in 2017, well before the current wave of AI innovation. “We reinvested heavily in AI, and now we see a huge impact from generative AI. Our world has changed dramatically,” he says.

Neubloc’s approach is unique in that it combines strategic consulting with practical implementation. “Think of us as a McKinsey that actually knows what it’s talking about,” Viteri quips. The company focuses on delivering tangible results through a methodical, bite-sized approach rather than attempting to “boil the ocean” with grandiose, high-risk projects.

The Challenge of Scaling and Talent Acquisition

Looking ahead, Viteri’s goal for Neubloc is ambitious yet strategic: doubling the company’s size within the next 12 months. This goal is fueled by AI’s increasing relevance across all business sectors. However, Viteri acknowledges that finding skilled AI talent is a significant challenge, stating, “At the launch of GPT, there were only about 2,000 generative AI developers worldwide. We had to find a scalable way to develop talent.”

Neubloc has addressed this challenge by setting up global development processes and training programs for young graduates. “We bring in young masters and PhD students and get them up to speed quickly. It’s not a secret sauce, but it works for us,” he says.

Early Inspirations and Lasting Lessons

Viteri’s journey began with a strong technical foundation. He graduated from MIT with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering. His early career at HP and subsequent role at Sun Microsystems provided a robust platform for his entrepreneurial ventures. “Working at Sun, we went from a small team to a company accounting for 50% of Sun’s global sales. Those early successes made me think, ‘How hard can it be?'” he recalls.

However, it was his later experiences—both the highs of rapid IPOs and the lows of catastrophic failures—that truly shaped his entrepreneurial philosophy. “Every failure teaches you more than the successes.”

Future Goals and Strategic Vision

For the coming year, Viteri is focused on expanding Neubloc’s reach and impact, “We are on a strategic path combining enterprise and startup services with a focus on AI. Doubling our size is achievable, especially with the current AI boom.”

Viteri sees the biggest roadblock as the ongoing challenge of sourcing and developing AI talent. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic, leveraging Neubloc’s established processes and global reach to attract and nurture top-tier talent.

Final Thoughts

Armando Viteri’s entrepreneurial journey is a testament to the power of resilience, continuous learning, and strategic innovation. His experiences underscore the importance of thorough market research, genuine mentorship, and humility in navigating the complex landscape of entrepreneurship. As he continues to lead Neubloc LLC toward new heights, his story serves as an inspiring blueprint for entrepreneurs worldwide.

In Viteri’s words, “Success is not just about the wins; it’s about learning from the losses and continuously evolving.” His journey from Silicon Valley to global AI innovation exemplifies this ethos, offering valuable lessons for anyone looking to make their mark in the entrepreneurial world.
